Kotzebue Alaska
The small community of Kotzebue Alaska houses the largest population of Eskimo residents above the Arctic Circle. Kotzebue is officially a city although many will tell you it is a village. Here you will find all kinds of fun and exciting things to see and do. To reach Kotzebue you will need to go to the northern part of the Baldwin Peninsula which is 1479 miles south of the North Pole and a mere 26 miles above the Arctic circle. The Siberian mainland is located about 175 miles from Kotzebue.
The climate in this village changes throughout the year. In the summer, temperatures in the 50s are average although they can climb higher. Wintertime brings temperatures ranging from 30 degrees below to 10 degrees above zero. In the coldest part of the winter, Kotzebue Sound freezes and remains frozen up until June. At this time you will see spring bursting out all over the tundra. The seasonal climate is just one reason people choose to visit the area of Kotzebue. You may want to plan your trip around the time of year you are most interested in experiencing. Many travelers find the summer months quite pleasant and the winter months very cold.
The first part of June starts a period of sunlight that remains for approximately 37 days. Periods of lasting sunlight and darkness is commonplace in certain regions of Alaska. When it comes to the residents themselves, you will find they live in modern style homes rather than traditional igloos. Even so, this region retains an old-world charm evident by the gravel beach that serves as Main Street. This village is also home to the NANA Museum of the Arctic. This museum has been standing since 1976 and features exhibits depicting Arctic living.
If you decide to visit Kotzebue Alaska, be prepared for potentially harsh climates as previously described. This village does not have the bustling energy of Anchorage or Juneau but still has a lot to offer visitors to Alaska. A visit to this area will get you up close and personal with true Alaskan natives and educate you on how they live and how they have lived for many years. You'll also get to marvel at the amazing scenery which is quite common in the beautiful state of Alaska.
