Alaska Eagle

Bald eagles are a special majestic species of bird which serves as our national symbol. Nowhere is this celebrated more than in Alaska. There is an Alaska eagle festival held every year in honor of this bird. It is called the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival and it is held in Haines. This town is where more than 3,000 bald eagles flock each year to feast on salmon in the Chilkat River. This is an amazing sight as it is the largest gathering of bald eagles anywhere at anytime.

The reason the eagles flock to this area is because of warm water welling up in the river. This certain area of the river stays free from ice, which means the eagles are able to catch fish which they can't do in other areas. The birds come from as far as Washington to enjoy the plethora of salmon. You will spot them in October, sitting along the sand and in trees. They are protected by the Alaska Chilkat Eagle Preserve. Although hundreds of bald eagles are here by this point, the largest number can be seen in the middle of November.

At the festival you will find all kinds of merchandise to buy. There is also food, crafts, exhibitions and more. Wildlife photographers are also honored at this celebration. You can see a schedule of events for the upcoming festival on their website. One thing is for sure, if you are interested in bald eagles, wildlife photography or Alaska this festival is a definite must-visit. Because it is so popular, you should make your reservations early to ensure you are able to get in. Any travel agent can help you book your trip.

Of course you can also plan your vacation getaway to the Alaska Eagle Festival on your own using the Internet. Sites like Expedia and Priceline can help you find and reserve airfare and accommodations. You will also want to look at the festival site to make sure there are no tickets or reservations you need to make there. If you can begin planning at least six months in advance this is recommended because the festival is a big deal in the area. Even if you're not particularly fascinated by bald eagles you are sure to be intrigued by the large gathering of them and all the various events and activities.
